Four Walk-in Cooler Maintenance Tips

For restaurants or other commercial businesses that serve food, having a well-functioning walk-in cooler is an absolute necessity. These coolers are big investments in your business, so you want to keep them in good shape for as long as possible. If something were to go wrong, you could end up with a pile of spoiled food, costing you money in both wasted product and cooler repairs.

Routine maintenance is essential for the daily operation and longevity of your walk-in cooler. You can check on some parts yourself every so often, but you may need to recruit the help of a commercial refrigeration service in Delaware for parts replacement and hard-to-reach maintenance.

Here are four tips you should implement into your walk-in cooler maintenance routine:

  • Check evaporator fan coils: The evaporator fan in your walk-in cooler circulates air and removes heat, which is necessary for temperature regulation. It also has a pan that collects excess water and drains it outside of your cooler to avoid any mess. The fan blades and coils should be inspected for damage and cleaned at least once a year for proper functionality.
  • Clean condensing unit: The condensing unit in your cooler is what keeps it running 24/7, which means it endures a significant amount of stress. Once every few months, turn off the power to your cooler and clean the condensing unit. Additionally, remove any debris or objects around the outside of your cooler that might be blocking airflow to the condensing unit.
  • Temperature monitoring: Maintaining a steady temperature within your cooler is necessary for keeping food safe. You shouldn’t have to continuously adjust the temperature once the cooler is installed. If you notice you have to change the temperature adjustments every few days, call in a commercial refrigeration service in Delaware for assistance.
  • Check door seals: Finally, check the seals and hinges on your cooler doors to make sure you’re getting a tight seal every time. Hinges may need to be lubricated every few months. If your door seals are looking a little worn-down, they should be replaced to ensure you aren’t wasting energy.

Make it a point to create a maintenance plan for your walk-in cooler and go through it every month, checking on the things that may need to be replaced and cleaning the dirty parts. It is also a good idea to give the interior of your cooler a good scrub-down with mild soap and water to keep it clean and safe for your food.

If you are too busy or don’t want to worry about doing maintenance by yourself, call in a commercial refrigeration service in Delaware to do it for you! No matter who is doing the maintenance, a well-maintained walk-in cooler will last longer and run more efficiently, saving you money.
