Cleaning Tips for Your Walk-in Refrigerator or Freezer

If you own or manage a grocery store or restaurant, chances are you are familiar with the concept of a commercial-size (or walk-in) refrigerator and freezer. While these are integral to the function of your food-based business, walk-in refrigerators and freezers are prone to their share of problems.

Keeping your walk-in refrigerator organized is only half the battle. Even if you know the precise location of each item, your walk-in fridge needs to be cleaned periodically. Here are some tips for cleaning your refrigerator in Delaware.

Stay on top of small messes

Cleaning up small spills inside your walk-in refrigerator or freezer is not only necessary for sanitary reasons, but it can also help you prevent small issues from becoming large problems. This includes checking for packages that may be spoiled or expired and investigating areas that are out of sight and difficult to reach. Be sure to clean up spills promptly and toss expired packages.

Do not use caustic cleaning chemicals

If you or your employees do see a spill in the walk-in refrigerator or freezer, you can clean it with a 50/50 mix of soap and water. Because walk-in refrigerators and freezers are typically made of metal, harsh cleaning chemicals can potentially damage the floor or walls.

Clean the condensing coil biannually

It’s prudent to clean the evaporator and condensing coil of your walk-in refrigerator or freezer at least every six months. You should clean it more often if the freezer or refrigerator is located outside, as the exterior air is going to have more particles in it than interior air.

You can use an industrial vacuum and a wet cloth to clean the condensing coil, or soap and water applied with a stiff-bristled brush.

Consult a technician to clear the walk-in’s drain lines

The drain lines are crucial to the function of your walk-in refrigerator or freezer. Unfortunately, they are not easy to clean, and to attempt to do so on your own might create more problems than it solves. Having a technician out to take a look at your drain lines and help you clean them twice a year will prove invaluable.

Check and clean the door

One of the most vital tips for cleaning your refrigerator is checking the door, its hinges and its gaskets. An improper seal on your walk-in refrigerator or freezer can spell big trouble for anything you’re trying to keep fresh. If you do find anything in the tiny crevices of your door, like mold, grime or other buildup, you can wash it away with soap and water applied with a soft cloth. If you like, when your gaskets are thoroughly cleaned, you can extend their life cycle by applying a special vinyl preservative.
