Commercial Kitchen Hood Preventative Maintenance Tips

One of the leading causes of commercial kitchen fires is improperly maintained kitchen hoods. To avoid these catastrophic events, it’s absolutely vital to keep kitchen hoods and connected exhaust systems clean and functional at all times. Doing so will ensure that your establishment’s staff and patrons remain safe. Fortunately, cleaning kitchen hoods is a relatively simple process that drastically reduces the chance of an emergency.

In some cases, regular maintenance won’t be enough, and you’ll need restaurant equipment repair in Delaware. But when it comes to everyday operations, maintenance is absolutely necessary to keep your restaurant, bar, bakery or café operational. Read on to find out some quick and easy tips to keep your commercial kitchen hood and adjacent appliances running smoothly.

  • Keep a maintenance schedule: Staff members should have a maintenance schedule that is written down and should be held to following it. Failing to complete these tasks could result in health code violations, fires and other problems in your business. Make sure you have a detailed list of maintenance tasks handy and hold your staff accountable.
  • Check the grease filter: Once a week at a minimum, you should check out the grease filter. If you tend to cook with a lot of grease, you’ll need to do this more regularly, such as several times a week. Add this task to your maintenance schedule and don’t neglect it.
  • Inspect the fan blades: This is essential to make sure that the exhaust system is operating as it should be. The fan blades need to be balanced and undamaged. Over time, fans tend to malfunction, so make certain to check them regularly. The same goes for fan blade bearings that may need to be lubricated and fan belts that may need to be adjusted. When you’re done with this, go up to the roof to look at the exterior of the fan, which is exposed to the elements and more likely to be damaged.
  • Go over the electrical components: A regular visual inspection of the commercial kitchen hood’s electrical system is also a smart idea. Look for signs of shorting, loose wires and other issues.
  • Motor maintenance: The motor needs to remain lubricated in order to work well. In addition, look at all the seals on the hood. You don’t want any oils, fats, grease or other materials getting into these.

Maintaining a commercial kitchen hood is a task that needs regular attention. Whenever you need restaurant kitchen repair in Delaware, it’s best to leave things to the pros.
