If you’re a business owner, you know how important it is to keep up with your HVAC systems. Not only can a broken AC system lead to expensive repairs and downtime, but it can also affect your company’s productivity. Luckily, it’s not uncommon for your AC unit to give you warning signs that it needs servicing. Let’s take a look at some of the most common signs it’s time to call in a professional commercial equipment technician!

Hot Air

One of the most obvious signs your commercial AC needs service is that it’s blowing hot air. This is a common problem that can be caused by low refrigerant levels, an electrical issue, clogged coils, or a damaged compressor. You may be able to fix the problem on your own by turning up your thermostat a few degrees or closing your top return registers, which sends warm air to the HVAC unit to be cooled. Changing your air filters regularly and scheduling maintenance at least once per year can also help you keep your airflow consistent between service visits. Inconsistent airflow can lead to hot and cold spots in a room, which are uncomfortable for the occupants of your business. If you’re having issues with your HVAC system not producing cool air, call an expert as soon as possible to schedule a maintenance visit.

Musty Smells

If your commercial air conditioner suddenly smells musty, it may be due to the mold and mildew that has grown inside of your system. This is a common problem, so it’s important to get it addressed as soon as possible. Another cause of musty smells is dust and debris, which can build up in the system over time. This can also lead to a thick, musty odor when the unit is on. If you suspect dust is the issue, call a professional to clean your system thoroughly.

Strange Noises

When you hear strange noises coming from your air conditioner, it’s time to call a professional. These sounds can indicate a serious problem, such as high pressure in the compressor portion of your AC. This can lead to damage, which could be costly. If the sound is paired with a hissing noise, this could be a sign of refrigerant leakage and should be addressed immediately. The sound can also be caused by a broken fan motor bearing or by the loosening of the fan blades and coils over time. It’s important to check the fan motor and tighten any loose parts before calling an HVAC specialist.

Increased Energy Bills

If you notice that your electricity bill is higher than usual, this could be a sign that your commercial air conditioner is in need of servicing. Dirty ducts and clogged coils cause your AC to work harder, which uses more energy, ultimately pushing up your power bill. You might also have a problem with your air conditioning unit if it’s older than 10 years. Older HVAC units are much less efficient than modern models, and they’ll cost more to run. During an AC service, technicians will inspect every aspect of your system. They’ll check for leaks, gas levels, electrical connections, and other critical components. If they find any problems, they’ll fix them as part of the service!
