The History of Commercial Refrigeration Systems in Delaware—and Beyond

Today, commercial refrigeration allows companies that store, handle and produce food to keep perishable goods fresh to reduce the harmful effects associated with improperly handled food. There are a variety of diseases that can be caused by food that is not kept at the right temperature, which is why it’s so important to have effective refrigeration technology and a commercial refrigeration contractor in Delaware that you can trust to handle your equipment’s needs.

You can find refrigeration equipment in all sizes, shapes and designs that have different capabilities and features. Commercial refrigeration equipment is manufactured with an exceptional degree of technology, including antimicrobial features that offer increased protection against health concerns.

This modern technology can be seen in many different commercial contexts, but it hasn’t been around forever. Refrigeration has a long history that began thousands of years ago, and finding out more can give you an increased appreciation for just how far we have come:

  • Prehistoric times: Believe it or not, the concept of refrigeration can be traced back to cavemen. In realizing that meat stayed fresh longer when it was kept cool, they began storing their meat in the snow during the winter, and in caves with cooler temperatures during the summer.
  • Ancient civilizations: Ancient civilizations created more sophisticated refrigeration methods. They would collect large quantities of snow during the winter months and then put it into deep trenches. Using the most effective insulating materials available, they were able to keep this snow frozen even after winter had passed to keep food cold. In some Asian countries, people harvested ice and kept it insulated so that it continued to be available year-round.
  • Middle Ages: In the 1500s, chemical cooling baths were developed in France. By creating a formulaic concoction of chemicals in a tub of water, the temperature would lower and things like drinks could be cooled more effectively. In some cases, they could even create ice by employing this method.
  • 19th century: Breweries in the 1800s had a need for more advanced cooling methods, and many of them were developed during this period of time. Mechanical refrigeration was developed so that breweries could manufacture their products year-round, but the technology was quickly identified for its ability to keep meat, dairy and other perishable foods fresh. Eventually, the refrigerator became an everyday appliance in the average household. The availability of refrigeration made it possible for food to be transported to and stored in urban areas that were located far away from food production centers.

Refrigeration equipment has certainly come a long way from the rudimentary methods of food preservation employed by prehistoric peoples.
